Egyptian Cotton Bath Towels Review: Egypt has long had the reputation of having the very best cotton in the world. However, what most people don’t realize is that the name ‘Egyptian cotton’ doesn’t actually refer to a ‘brand’ of cotton but rather where the cotton is grown. You see, Egyptian cotton is simply cotton that has been grown in Egypt.
This hot middle eastern country has the perfect conditions for growing cotton and making towels. It has just the right humidity, terrain and soil to make the highest quality ‘long thread’ cotton available. The very same cotton that we so enjoy in our quality bath towels, bed sheets and of course, our clothes. These long thread fibers, are also known as ’staples’ range from 1 3/8 to 2 1/4 inches in length, giving Egyptian cotton towels an ‘extra long staple’ (ELS) classification.
Egyptian cotton bath towels are made in a terry style fashion meaning they are made of long loops. Longer and denser loops make for a more absorbent and sturdier towel. This high level of absorbency also lends these special bathing towels very well to being died and colored. Hence, these plush and luxurious towels come in a wide variety of beautiful colors and styles and are second to none when it comes to quality.
However in recent years a new rival has emerged and that is Pima cotton. Pima cotton is also classed as an ELS (extra long staple) cotton and got it’s name from where it was originally grown – the Pima Indian reservation in Arizona. Yes, the United States is now competing with Egypt in the export market of ELS cotton.
The debate is on as to whether or not Pima cotton equals (or surpasses) the much loved and revered Egyptian cotton. However the most important thing to keep in mind is that bathroom towels that are made from either types of cotton are of excellent quality, so you can’t really go wrong in your choice. If in doubt though, stick with Egyptian bath towels and bask in the romantic idea that your bath towels, hand towels and beach towels are from a faraway exotic land. At least that’s what I do.
When buying your Egyptian cotton bath towel set, be sure that the label or the website advertising it states that it is 100% Egyptian cotton. Some lesser products will try to mislead with claims of “made with Egyptian cotton”, or something to that effect. You’re paying top dollar for these super soft, super thick and fluffy bath towels and they are worth every cent, provided you buy the real thing. So just be mindful of this and if in doubt be sure to question the seller about their authenticity and while you’re at it about the ideal care instructions.
If you choose to invest in these premium and luxurious, they’ll bring you much pleasure for years to come. Make sure you treat them well so they’ll really last and stay beautiful for you.
