Do you know that not all towels are equal. The fact is that towels very much differ in quality. How thick they are and how soft and luxurious they feel will depend on what the towels are made of. When it comes to the best bath towels you’ll find that the ones that look the best, feel the best and last the longest are all of the highest quality.
Another fact that most people don’t realize is that the majority bath towels are made of cotton. However, not all cotton is created equal and there is several different types of cotton used in making bath towels today. Firstly, you have your standard cotton, which you’ll find that your basic, thin, average bath towels are made from. These towels are at the lower end of the price range.
Conversely at the top of the price range you’ll the best bath towels are made of Egyptian cotton. Egyptian cotton is considered the ‘Rolls Royce’ of cotton due to its longer fibrous threads that have contain moisture-absorbing power per square inch. These are the highest quality, best bath towels you can buy. You know the extra large, extra fluffy, extra soft and extra luxurious towels you enjoy when you stay at a high-end hotels or spas? These are most likely towels made from Egyptian cotton.
However, as great as Egyptian cotton is, a new rival has emerged in America that many are saying has the same quality and characteristics of Egyptian cotton. It’s called Pima cotton and it’s name and popularity are growing. In fact, Pima cotton has now given birth to a name brand of bath towels called, ‘Supima’ which are a little cheaper than your Egyptian cotton bath towels but of similar high quality.
Another factor that you should consider when trying to source the best bath towels for your bathroom is the weight. Most people don’t know that towel weight or ‘density’ is measured in grams per square inch or GSM. In basic terms, the lower the GSM, the thinner and lighter the towel and the more inexpensive. These towels are ideal for taking to the gym or out on day trip, or just to keep on hand in case of an emergency. The thicker, heavier and more luxurious higher GSM towels are much more expensive and should be reserved for the bathroom in your Master Bedroom and / or in the guest bathroom in your home. These bath towels are very special and deserve to be valued.
A word of warning though as you’re shopping for the best bath towels. Make sure you check the label and see that it says 100% cotton, whether that be 100% Egyptian cotton or 100% Pima cotton. There are some devious and sneaky towel manufacturers out their that try and pass off their inferior quality bath towels as the highest quality by using words like ‘luxury’, ‘top of the range’ and ‘made with Egyptian cotton’. The fact is that many of these towels will often contain synthetic fibers such as polyester which in fact reduces the absorbency and softness of the towel. So make sure you check those labels so you know exactly what you’re paying for. It also helps to look for trademark labels to ensure you’re buying the real thing.
There are many other types of towels on the market too such as microfiber towels which are not made from natural fibers but are in fact engineered. The main advantage to microfiber bath towels is that they are significantly thinner and lighter than your average cotton bath towels. Microfiber bath towels also have excellent absorbency, which is important and they also have a lovely suede-like feel to them. They are great for drying off quickly, especially your hair and they make those lovely bath robes too.
Other more unusual types of natural fibers are being used in bath towels today too. Two of the most popular are Modal which comes from the cellulose of Beech trees and is said to at least 40-50% more absorbent than cotton. Modal has also become popular among clothing designers. It is lovely and soft and makes for beautiful tops, skirts and dresses.
The other type of unusual natural fiber being used in bath towels is Bamboo. Yes, I did really say Bamboo. While it sounds strange fibers made from the Bamboo plant have an intriguingly luxurious soft texture when compared to cotton. – one is made from the cellulose from Beech trees called Modal, which it’s said is approximately 50% more absorbent than cotton and resists fading.
If you’re concerned about the natural purity of your bath towels, organic cotton (which is obviously pesticide and chemical free) would be the perfect choice for you.
Choosing the best bath towels for you is all about quality first. You want your towels to last. Secondly you’ll want to consider colors. Bath towels are very much like accessories and ideally should serve as a contrasting feature in your bathroom. For example if you have strong, deeper colors on the walls the best choice would be white, which has a beautiful, timeless and luxurious quality.
On the other hand if your bathroom is primarily white or cream, then by all means choose bath towels with bright and vibrant colors. This will really give the whole bathroom a lift.
There’s even themed bath towels for example leopard skin spots, love hearts, floral patterns and kids bath towels too. Every design you can imagine. You might even like to go with embroidered bath towels for that nice, personal touch. Anyway you look at it bath towels make it a cheap and easy way to change the look and feel of your bathroom, without the headaches and cost that go with renovating.
Now go and find your best bath towels and enjoy them.
